NEW CARGO

The sale of the European Ford Truck Division to Iveco in 1986 and the US and Australian Ford Truck Division to Freightliner (Sterling) in 1997 was not the end of the production of Ford Trucks.  Ford kept on building class 5 trucks in the US and just recently introduced the CLF series, a badge engineered Fuso. The Ford Cargo production continued in Brazil, Argentina, India (Ashok Leyland) and Turkey (Otosan). Also Freightliner continued to built the Cargo, but not badged as Sterling but as Freightliner Cargo. Ashok Leyland is a former Leyland subisdiary who bought the Cargo concession from Iveco after Iveco discontinued the Ford Cargo in 1993. Ford Otosan is a joint venture between Ford and Otosan. Otosan is the turkisch Ford importer and also produces all the Ford the Transit vans for Ford of Europe. For the local turkisch market, Otosan builts the Cargo under the Ford nameplate. In 2005, Otosan launched the New Cargo. A complete new designed Ford Cargo with a new duratorque 8 L Euro 2/3 engine. Otosan has plans to export the new Cargo to non EU markets. The truck division of Otosan Ford has big plans for the near future: Euro 4 and larger engines (Caterpillar) and even a bigger cab. Ford's UK transportdivision currently operates two left hand drive Cargo 1830 tractor units. I am sure that we will see the new Cargo also in Europe when the ambitieus plans of Otosan com true.
